Gunned down in third attempt

KOTA KINABALU - Sibu businessman Hii Lam King, 36, and university student Ting Wen Hou, 23, were gunned down in a dramatic drive-by shooting along Jalan Kolam, Luyang here, yesterday.

Both Hii, who had previously escaped two other shootings, and Ting were killed instantly.

Last June, Hii was travelling in a vehicle in Bandar Utama, Selangor with a Mongolian woman, when assailants attempted a drive-by shooting, hitting his companion four times. He is believed to have been the actual target.

In October, 2014, an unknown assailant opened fire at Hii’s house in Sibu, but there were no injuries.

It is understood that one of two men on a motorcycle, who had tailed the four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle that the victims were travelling in together with Ting’s twin brother at 7.30am, fired eight shots at the driver’s side window, hitting Hii, who was behind the wheel, and Ting, who was seated in the front passenger seat.

Ting’s twin, who was seated at the back, escaped unhurt.

Following the shooting, the moving 4WD vehicle rammed into the rear of a hatchback car.

It is understood the woman driver was not hurt in the incident.

Initial police investigation showed that Hii had just dropped off his child at school and was heading from Lintas towards the city centre with the brothers when the incident happened.

“Two men on a motorcycle approached the driver’s side of the vehicle and one of the assailants fired eight shots at the window,” said Sabah Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief SAC Salehhudin Abd Rahman when met at the scene.

“Both the driver and the front passenger were killed instantly due to gunshot wounds.”

He said Hii had been living here for the past few years and was working with his father-in-law, while the brothers were on holiday.

On the motive of the shooting and whether the perpetrators were hired killers, Salehhudin said police were still investigating.

“We can’t say for sure. We have to investigate from all angles,” he said, but declined to comment on whether the shooting was connected with several other shooting cases in Sarawak.

“For now, police have classified the case as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code,” he said.

“All police elements have also been carried out including police roadblocks to track the suspects. The police also urge anyone with valuable information to come forward to assist in the investigation.”

The bodies have been brought to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a post-mortem.
